Magical Tawang Transforms: Tourists Rejoice at Season’s First Enchanting Snowfall
Visitors to Tawang, a picturesque town in Arunachal Pradesh, were finally greeted with the season’s first snowfall after a spell of anticipation since late December. Located about 10,000 feet above sea level near the Bhutan-China border, Tawang is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, attracting tourists from across India. Temperatures in the area dropped to minus 1 degree Celsius, with snowfall continuing from Tuesday into early Wednesday, reaching a milder 1.3 degrees Celsius by Wednesday evening.
Tourists who braved the cold since December were rewarded with snowy landscapes that many had eagerly awaited. Pabitra Borah, a local hotelier from Assam, noted that those who arrived in January had the opportunity to enjoy the snowfall.
Tawang’s main attractions include the Tawang Monastery and Sela Pass, which entice significant tourist numbers. While most visitors prefer the clear autumn weather, the winter snow draws a different crowd. Enhanced road infrastructure from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh has increased visitor numbers since 2015. Last year, heavy rainfall delayed some tourists until January for the snowfall. Meanwhile, clear skies in November and December produced no snow.
The region recorded approximately 100,000 domestic and 800 international tourists last year. The upcoming Torgya festival from January 27 to 29 is expected to draw even more visitors. Despite its allure, visitor safety has become a concern, with officials warning against walking on unstable, frozen lakes, underscoring the need for precaution in Tawang.
Additionally, the local tourism department emphasized the importance of acclimatization for those visiting high-altitude areas like Sela Pass and Sho-nga-tser Lake.
In summary, Tawang’s snowfall coupled with cultural festivals sets the stage for a high influx of tourists, but safety and preparation remain paramount for a fulfilling visit.
