In a tragic incident at a relief camp in Imphal West, a 20-year-old woman named Sukham Chanu Devi took her own life on January 7. Originally from Singhat in Churachandpur district, Chanu had been married for just four months to her husband, Sukham James. The couple, along with two other family members, had been residing at the Mekola Higher Secondary School relief camp.
Chanu was discovered hanging near her bed around 4:15 pm, at a time when her husband was reportedly away at work. The circumstances surrounding her death have led the police to register a case as they proceed with investigations into this deeply unfortunate event.
The authorities have confirmed that Chanu’s body has been transferred to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The case is being handled by the Nambol police, who are working to uncover any underlying factors that may have contributed to this loss.
This incident highlights the distressing situation faced by individuals living in relief camps, where the struggle for normalcy can often be overwhelming. As the investigation continues, questions about mental health support and the conditions in such camps are likely to be raised, reminding society of the urgent need for more comprehensive support systems for those in crisis. The tragic death of Sukham Chanu Devi serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by many in similar situations and calls for a renewed focus on providing necessary help and support to those in vulnerable positions.
