Urgent! Coal India Rallies to Rescue 15 Brave Souls Trapped in Assam’s Umrangso Mine
Union Coal Minister Kishan Reddy has directed Coal India Limited to fully support rescue operations at Assam’s Umrangsu mine, where 15 laborers have been trapped since January 6. This directive follows an urgent request from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma expressed gratitude on social media, acknowledging the swift federal response.
The rescue effort has mobilized various agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, Assam Rifles, and Indian Army, with further backing from the Navy and Air Force. Despite these concerted efforts, no survivors have been found so far. Investigations suggest the mine might have been operating illegally. A suspect, Punish Nunisa, has been apprehended as authorities delve into the incident under mining laws.
The disaster occurred when sudden flooding trapped workers in the rat hole mine located in Dima Hasao district. Eyewitnesses report that an underground water source may have breached the mine walls, leaving workers with no time to escape. Senior officials are on site, coordinating the increasingly complex rescue operation as rising water levels continue to impede recovery efforts.
The situation underscores the urgency and challenges of ensuring miner safety and regulatory compliance in such operations.
