China Assures: Vital Yarlung Zangbo Dam Won’t Harm India’s Water Flow – A Promising Development
Beijing, Jan 6: China has confirmed plans to construct the world’s largest dam on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet, near the border with India. The ambitious project, budgeted at approximately USD 137 billion, is set in an ecologically sensitive Himalayan zone prone to seismic activity. Chinese authorities assured that extensive scientific evaluations confirm no adverse effects on downstream countries, specifically addressing India and Bangladesh’s concerns.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that the infrastructure will aid these nations in disaster prevention and climate change responses rather than jeopardize their ecological or water resource rights. This comes amid India’s expressed apprehension, highlighted during ongoing discussions between the Indian government and U.S National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, who is visiting New Delhi to discuss the Indo-U.S strategic partnership.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has urged China to safeguard the interests of downstream states, referring to established user rights over the river’s waters. They continue to engage through expert and diplomatic channels, seeking transparency and consultation from Chinese counterparts. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reinforced the necessity for China to protect downstream interests, reflecting on previous dialogues and urging increased transparency.
Earlier, Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning defended the project’s safety and beneficial impact, noting China’s commitment to ongoing communication and cooperation with downstream nations on disaster relief. She highlighted the hydropower project’s alignment with China’s endeavor to enhance clean energy production and address climate challenges.
As discussions persist, the international community closely observes the potential environmental and geopolitical ramifications of this colossal engineering undertaking in one of the world’s most tectonically active and politically sensitive areas.
