Breaking: Bangladesh’s New Challenges for Sheikh Hasina as Yunus Government Decides Bold Move by Feb 12
In a significant development in Bangladesh’s political landscape, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faces increasing challenges as the country’s International Criminal Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against her and ten others, including her former defense adviser Tariq Ahmed Siddiq and ex-Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed. The charges relate to alleged disappearances and killings. These warrants, issued by a tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Martuza Majumdar, followed two petitions filed by the prosecution seeking the arrests. Bangladesh authorities have been instructed to arrest and produce Sheikh Hasina and the others by February 12, as reported by ‘The Daily Star’.
This development complicates an already strained political situation in Bangladesh, characterized by allegations of human rights violations linked to Hasina and her associates. Last year, similar warrants were issued against Hasina and 45 others, connected to alleged crimes during a student-led agitation that resulted in her overthrow and the deaths of over 500 individuals. Since then, Hasina has fled to India, living in exile for security reasons.
Following Hasina’s ouster, relations between Bangladesh and India have deteriorated, exacerbated by issues concerning the Hindu minority and the rise of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as the chief adviser in Bangladesh. The interim government has pledged to extradite Hasina and has sent a diplomatic note to India regarding the extradition. While the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed receiving this request, they have yet to formally respond, adhering to diplomatic protocols.
Living in political exile, Sheikh Hasina has periodically commented on Bangladesh’s political affairs through the Awami League’s social media channels or her son, Sajeeb Wazed. This situation continues to evolve, with potential implications for the region’s geopolitical dynamics.
