Urgent Battle for Justice: MP High Court to Tackle Union Carbide’s Toxic Legacy on Feb 18
The Madhya Pradesh High Court is set to review the case concerning the incineration of hazardous waste from Union Carbide at Pithampur in the Dhar district on February 18. A recent hearing took place before a division bench consisting of Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Vivek Jain, where the government successfully requested an extension of six weeks to prepare.
This proceeding stemmed from a petition submitted by the MGM Alumni Association of Indore, which expresses concern over the government’s decision to proceed with the waste burning without consulting residents of Indore and Pithampur. These actions have raised significant public scrutiny and necessitated enhanced security measures around the Ramki Enviro factory in Pithampur, including the establishment of two temporary police posts and continuous patrols to maintain order.
In parallel, the Citizen Consumer Guide Forum from Jabalpur has approached the National Green Tribunal, seeking a directive for the state government to assure, through an affidavit, that the toxic waste disposal process will not adversely impact the land, climate, or public health.
These legal actions underscore the growing apprehension from various regional stakeholders about environmental safety and public health implications. The upcoming hearing by the Madhya Pradesh High Court will be pivotal in addressing these concerns and detailing the government’s plans regarding the disposal process in order to alleviate fears of environmental or health risks. The court’s decision will be closely monitored as it could set significant precedents for handling industrial waste and involving local communities in environmental decisions.
