Urgent Alert: Crucial Guidelines Unveiled to Safeguard Delhi from HMPV Outbreak
Delhi health authorities have proactively issued an advisory to prepare for possible health challenges related to the Human MetaPneumoVirus (HMPV) and other respiratory illnesses. On Sunday, January 5, 2024, Dr. Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services, led a meeting with key health officials, including chief district medical officers and the state programme officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), to address concerns about respiratory infections in the city.
Given reports of a rise in respiratory illnesses in China, Delhi hospitals have been urged to report Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases promptly via the IHIP Portal. The implementation of strict isolation protocols and universal precautions for suspected cases is mandatory. Hospitals are also instructed to thoroughly document SARI cases and lab-confirmed influenza instances for better monitoring.
To manage mild cases, facilities must ensure the availability of paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups, and oxygen. Despite these precautions, data from the IDSP, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate no significant surge in respiratory illnesses as of January 2, 2025. This initiative underscores Delhi’s commitment to maintaining public health vigilance amid global health concerns.
Published on January 6, 2025, this advisory highlights Delhi’s strategic approach to counter potential health threats and ensure its healthcare system is prepared and responsive.
