Unveiling Triumph: Mizoram CM Celebrates ‘Mizo History and Great Chiefs of Sailo – Vandula & Ropuiliani’
At Aijal Club, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma unveiled the book “Mizo History and the Great Chiefs of Sailo: Vandula & Ropuiliani,” penned by researchers from Mizoram University and published by the Dr. Selbuanga Foundation. The book examines the rich history of the Sailo chiefs, focusing on the iconic figures Vandula and Ropuiliani. The Chief Minister emphasized the difficulties in documenting Mizo history due to the late adoption of the Mizo alphabet, relying heavily on British colonial accounts. He urged the exploration of pre-colonial history through indigenous narratives, distinct from colonial interpretations.
The book provides an in-depth exploration of Vandula’s lineage and honors freedom fighter Ropuiliani, who took over leadership after her husband Vandula’s death. Ropuiliani’s resistance to British rule led to her arrest and imprisonment, where she remained until her death. Her legacy and dedication continue to inspire Mizo national pride.
The authors utilized scientific research and oral traditions to compile their work. During the event, a preview was offered by Dr. Hmingthanzuali, and co-author Dr. Laithangpuii shared insights from their findings. The gathering included descendants of Vandula and Ropuiliani, highlighting the enduring interest in preserving Mizo heritage.
Ropuiliani, born in 1828 to Chief Lalsavunga of Aizawl, became the first recorded female chief in Mizo history. After marrying Vandula, she assumed leadership of multiple villages following his death in 1889. Her tenure was marked by strong opposition to British colonial forces, influencing other chiefs to similarly resist. Her eventual arrest led to imprisonment in Rangamati, where she passed away in 1895.
