Breaking: Sikkim Information Commission’s Bold Move Unveils Loan Defaulters’ List – A Win for Transparency!
The Sikkim Information Commission (SIC) has mandated the State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) to disclose comprehensive details about individuals who have defaulted on their loans. This includes revealing defaulters’ names, addresses, loan amounts, unpaid interest, the dates when loans were approved, and when the last payments were made.
This directive arose after activists Sangay Gyatso Bhutia, Passang Sherpa, and Sonam Gyatso Sherpa filed an appeal on November 8, 2024, due to SBS’s failure to release the information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The appeal points to concerns over potential indiscriminate targeting by SBS as it initiates the seizure of properties belonging to loan defaulters in Sikkim. Critics argue that the bank may not be impartial in its treatment of all defaulters, and publishing this list could address such allegations.
The SIC’s order is expected to shed light on SBS’s methods of loan recovery and might attract increased public scrutiny of their practices. This development is particularly significant as it emphasizes transparency and equitable treatment amid rising concerns over the bank’s handling of its defaulters.
The move to make this information publicly accessible is seen as a step towards ensuring fairness and clarity in financial dealings by SBS and other banking institutions.
