Outrage in Tibet: Village Leader Tortured to Death in Custody, Over 20 Falsely Imprisoned
Chinese authorities are facing accusations of torturing a Tibetan village leader, Gonpo Namgyal, to death during a brutal detention, igniting outrage among Tibetan communities worldwide. Namgyal, who led a settlement in Ponkor township, Darlag County, succumbed to his injuries on December 18, just three days after being released due to declining health, as reported by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).
The crackdown was initiated in May 2024 following the Tibetan Language Association’s launch of the “Pure Mother Tongue” campaign, designed to preserve the Tibetan language amid rising pressures to adopt Mandarin. Namgyal and over 20 others, including campaign leader Khenpo Tenpa Dhargye, were arrested and charged with “endangering state security.”
Reports from Namgyal’s detention describe severe torture, including repeated electric shocks and other forms of inhumane treatment over seven months. Upon preparing his body for cremation, investigators found he had suffered severe internal injuries, including burned organs, believed to be the result of torture.
Khenpo Tenpa Dhargye, a noted Tibetan Buddhist scholar and advocate for cultural preservation, remains in custody, with no information available on his condition or location. His arrest has sparked widespread concern, prompting Tibetan communities to hold prayers for his safety and release.
Observers interpret these detentions as part of a broader Chinese strategy aimed at suppressing Tibetan identity and enforcing Mandarin dominance. Critics argue these actions undermine Tibetan culture and language under the pretense of fostering “national unity consciousness,” raising significant human rights issues. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between the preservation of Tibetan cultural identity and the pressures of Chinese state policies, drawing international attention and concern over allegations of human rights violations in Tibet.
