Revolutionary Boost: Assam’s Border Districts Enhance Visibility for Safer Commercial Transport
Assam has emerged as a frontrunner in road safety among major Indian states, achieving a 15% decline in both road accidents and fatalities, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 24. This accomplishment is the result of stringent safety protocols and measures instigated during prior review meetings. The CM highlighted the role of robust enforcement, particularly targeting drunk driving, as a critical factor in this decline. Rigorous checks, especially after 10 PM in Guwahati, alongside a strong emphasis on the “No Drink and Drive” policy, have been instrumental in minimizing road mishaps.
To maintain this positive trend, the Assam government plans to extend its road safety initiatives through the festive period of Magh Bihu. Guidelines have been issued to the Excise Department for exploring flexible timings for bars, aiming to control late-night activities. Among announced safety measures, commercial vehicles will now require reflective patches to improve visibility, with the implementation overseen by border district Superintendents of Police (SPs). Additionally, commercial drivers will undergo vision testing, with appropriate treatments provided for those with impairments.
Addressing local road safety concerns, authorities are fast-tracking the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is incorporating speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage into future road projects to bolster safety further.
In parallel, the state’s road safety awareness campaign will leverage social media to educate the public and promote safe driving habits, thereby fostering a culture of responsible road use. Through these comprehensive strategies, Assam aims to not only sustain but enhance its road safety record, setting a benchmark for other states in India to follow.
