Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has proudly delivered two significant capital warships to the Indian Navy: Nilgiri and Surat. These state-of-the-art vessels represent a milestone in India’s naval capabilities and demonstrate the country’s push towards self-reliance in defense production.
Nilgiri marks a significant achievement as it is the first stealth frigate of the Project 17A Class. This vessel incorporates advanced technologies that stand on par with the finest warships globally, reflecting India’s growing prowess in maritime engineering. As the first ship of its class, Nilgiri sets a new standard for Indian naval design and construction.
Surat, on the other hand, is the fourth stealth destroyer of the Project 15B Class. It is a versatile platform, capable of executing a wide array of tasks and missions across diverse naval warfare spectrums. Highlighting India’s commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative, 72 percent of the components in the P15B class destroyers are indigenously sourced. This marks a significant advancement over previous classes and underlines the government’s focus on fostering a robust domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem.
Both warships were meticulously designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, constructed by MDL, and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai. They will undergo sea trials to test their performance and reliability in real-world maritime scenarios.
