Meghalaya’s Frustration Peaks: Bold Call for Assam to Engage in Resolving Border Dispute
The Meghalaya government has voiced concerns over Assam’s lack of urgency to engage in talks aimed at resolving their ongoing border disputes during the second negotiation phase. This was highlighted by Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who also heads the West Khasi Hills regional committee. Lyngdoh revealed that discussions have been initiated by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of West Khasi Hills with Assam’s Kamrup DC. Furthermore, he has personally communicated these issues with Assam’s Chairman, Chandra Mohan Patowary.
The call for resuming negotiations comes amid mounting pressure from citizens and political leaders, who are eager to address the lingering border issues, which have been dormant for nearly two years. Despite what Lyngdoh described as a “discouraging” response from Assam so far, he emphasized Meghalaya’s commitment to persevere in dialogue and hopes for discussions to recommence soon.
The two states previously reached a landmark agreement in March 2023 to tackle their long-standing border disputes via a phased approach, which Union Home Minister Amit Shah described as a “historic day” for the Northeast. In the first phase, disputes were successfully addressed in six less contentious areas, including Gizang and Tarabari, with Assam receiving 18.51 square kilometers out of the disputed 36.79 square kilometers.
The current focus of the second phase is on more complex regions such as Langpih and Borduar. As the negotiations face a standstill, the Meghalaya government underscores the importance of continued dialogue to amicably settle the disputes and ensure lasting peace in the region.
