Explosive Legal Showdown: Bibi Jagir Kaur Challenges SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami’s Authority
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Harjinder Singh Dhami is facing increased pressure following a public dispute with rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bibi Jagir Kaur. Appearing before the Punjab State Women Commission (PSWC), Bibi Jagir Kaur asserted that Dhami lacks the moral right to maintain his position and called for legal action against him. This controversy erupted after an audio clip featuring Dhami’s alleged abusive remarks against Kaur surfaced, prompting his summons by the Commission. Dhami appeared before the Commission earlier, where he apologized, claiming stress led to his comments.
However, Bibi Jagir Kaur remains steadfast in her stance, arguing that Dhami’s conduct disqualifies him from leading an institution like the SGPC, which holds significant historical and religious importance. She expressed disappointment over a person in his role resorting to such language and emphasized the need to protect women’s dignity and the integrity of the position Dhami holds.
PSWC chairperson Raj Lalli Gill acknowledged Kaur’s concerns and pledged to seek legal advice regarding the next steps. Kaur praised Gill for prioritizing women’s safety and expressed her determination not to forgive Dhami. Accompanied by former Commission chairperson Paramjit Kaur Landran, who advocated for legal action based on Dhami’s admission, Kaur highlighted the insult to the philosophical teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, a proponent of women’s rights.
As the situation unfolds, the Board faces scrutiny over its leadership standards, with the broader Sikh community watching closely. The incident marks a rare occurrence where an SGPC leader is embroiled in controversy of this nature, raising questions about the institution’s adherence to its foundational values.
