Shockwaves of Trump’s Tariff Threat: Boomerang Effect Could Devastate America in the Dragon’s Den
Before Donald Trump assumed the presidency, China had begun signaling its firm stance against potential U.S. pressures. In a bold economic move, China has already banned the export of critical rare metals like gallium, germanium, and antimony to the U.S., which are crucial for America’s tech and defense sectors, potentially inflicting over $3 billion in losses.
In a strategic maneuver to counter Trump’s proposed tariffs—10% on all imports and a significant 60% on Chinese imports—China is contemplating weakening the yuan by 2025. The devaluation would render Chinese exports more affordable, thereby diminishing the tariff impact. According to Reuters, such a devaluation could be sanctioned soon, as evidenced by recent discussions among the Politburo, China’s key decision-making body. This marks China’s first major monetary policy easing in 14 years and aligns with the People’s Bank of China’s (PBOC) readiness to let the yuan fall to 7.5 per dollar.
The yuan’s depreciation is no stranger to previous tariff tensions, having dropped over 12% from March 2018 to May 2020 during Trump’s initial presidential term. Analysts anticipate the yuan will further decline to 7.37 per dollar by the end of the next year, down roughly 4% since late September. A weaker yuan enhances China’s export competitiveness by lowering prices on the global market, although it would simultaneously increase import costs and potentially trigger inflation.
China’s potential yuan devaluation illustrates a calculated response to U.S. trade strategies, aiming to leverage its global economic standing while managing internal economic pressures. As the world’s second-largest economy braces to strengthen its international trade position, this currency strategy signals China’s readiness to navigate the complexities of the ongoing trade discourse aggressively and tactically.
