Urgent Dredging Efforts in Dhubri: A Crucial Step to Overcome Brahmaputra’s Water Crisis
In Dhubri, an urgent dredging initiative has been launched to tackle the declining water levels in the Brahmaputra River, a project crucial for restoring its navigability and supporting local livelihoods. This expansive operation, initiated by the Dredger Corporation of India, involves the use of four boats and three dredgers from Bangladesh, brought in about 15 days ago. These vessels, managed by Dharti Dredging and Infrastructure in Mumbai, unfortunately found themselves stuck in the river’s main channel, starkly illustrating the river’s dire condition.
Zahidur Alom, a prominent CNF agent at Dhubri Port, played a key role in ensuring the timely arrival of this equipment. The dredging team is equipped with three new dredgers, imported from China and assembled in Bangladesh, geared towards clearing silt and deepening the riverbed.
The Brahmaputra, once a vital artery for Assam’s commerce and transport, has alarmingly dwindled, halting riverine traffic and disrupting local economies. This has left fishermen, boat operators, and small businesses struggling. The dredging operation, targeted for completion within a month, aims to revitalize the river, enhance boat movement, and rejuvenate trade and livelihoods.
“The Brahmaputra has shrunk significantly, looking more like a drain than the majestic river it once was. Restoring it is vital for Assam’s lifeline,” commented a local involved in the project. Despite the temporary setback of stranded boats, the project’s urgency underscores its importance for the region’s economy and ecology.
The concerted effort promises a transformation for the Brahmaputra, aiming to reclaim its role as a lifeline for thousands, ensuring that commerce, daily life, and ecological balance can once again thrive along its banks.
