Meghalaya’s Ambitious Climate Investment Initiatives Worth Over Rs 4,500 Crore
NEW DELHI, Dec 7: The Meghalaya state government has taken a significant step towards sustainable development by signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for projects totaling more than Rs 4,500 crore during the 2nd Climate Investments and Technology Impact Summit at Meghalaya House in New Delhi.
These initiatives, led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, aim to bolster the state’s infrastructure, drive economic growth, and prioritize environmental sustainability. Notable projects include the deployment of Artificial Intelligence technologies valued at Rs 1,500 crore, a multipurpose convention center and university campus costing Rs 1,300 crore, and hydroelectric power development projects worth Rs 1,000 crore. Additionally, the Meghalaya Cable Car Ropeway project is slated at Rs 500 crore, while advanced agriculture cluster projects and waste-to-fertilizer initiatives are set to receive investments of Rs 125 crore each.
Addressing the summit, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the state’s commitment to green technology and sustainable industrial growth. He highlighted Meghalaya’s diverse agro-climatic zones and significant annual rainfall, pointing out the potential for high-value tourism and agriculture-based industries. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change, urging the need for comprehensive mitigation strategies.
Sangma also underscored various state programs, such as the Livelihoods and Access to Market Projects, Community-led Landscape Management Project, and protection of vulnerable catchment areas, all funded through climate financing. These initiatives aim to address climate-related challenges by promoting climate-resilient infrastructure.
Furthermore, he discussed the Green Meghalaya Project, Rejuvenating Rivers and Springs program, and Fish Sanctuaries, initiatives designed to bolster resilience against climate impacts while supporting sustainable practices tied to the state’s reliance on natural resources.
The event was graced by Slovenia’s Minister of Science and Innovation, Dr. Igor Panic, and Meghalaya State Investment Promotion Board Executive Chairman, Ram Mohan Mishra, among other dignitaries.
