Supreme Court’s Bold Move: Crucial Update on CBI’s Stand Against Michel James’ Bail in VVIP Chopper Scam
The Supreme Court of India has requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide a response regarding the bail application of Christian Michel James, a British national implicated in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scandal. Justices Vikram Nath and P.B. Varale have granted the CBI four weeks to submit their reply.
Christian Michel, alleged to be a middleman in the procurement deal for 12 VVIP helicopters, was extradited from the UAE in 2018 to face trial. After the Delhi High Court denied his bail on September 25, Michel approached the Supreme Court for relief.
The CBI accuses him of facilitating the deal with AgustaWestland International Ltd. through corrupt means. According to the investigation, a contract for the supply of these choppers worth €556.262 million (approximately ₹3,726.96 crore) was signed on February 8, 2010, between the Indian Ministry of Defence and AgustaWestland. The agency alleges that Michel, as a consultant, used insider knowledge to advantage AgustaWestland and was instrumental in reducing the altitude ceiling requirements, thereby allowing the company to re-enter the bidding process after initially being disqualified.
The CBI claims that Michel orchestrated illegal payments and provided sensitive information to AgustaWestland, which allegedly led to undue influence in awarding the contract. These monetary transactions allegedly benefitted Indian Air Force officers, ministry officials, and others, including relatives Sanjeev Tyagi, also known as Julie Tyagi, and Gautam Khaitan.
The allegations suggest a broader network of corruption involving prominent bureaucrats, politicians, and defense officials, all facilitated by significant bribes and personal influence. The Supreme Court’s decision on the bail plea is keenly awaited, as it continues to underline the high-profile nature of this international scandal.
