The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), once a dominant political force in Punjab, now finds itself at a crossroads, highlighted by its leaders seeking guidance from the Akal Takht, the supreme Sikh religious authority. The rise of the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, promising solutions to Punjab’s pressing issues, further marginalized SAD. However, this path to redemption poses significant challenges. While engaging in acts of atonement such as serving at the Golden Temple, the party must navigate the delicate balance of not alienating itself within a solely Sikh identity. This is vital given that SAD’s foundation as a defender of Sikh shrines has historically intertwined religion and politics. The party’s broader appeal, defined in its Moga Declaration focused on Punjabiyat, risks further erosion if perceived as retreating into a religious corner.

The core question remains: Will these public admonitions revive SAD or diminish its political clout further? As Punjab’s landscape continues to evolve, SAD must ensure that religious accountability does not overshadow its democratic responsibilities.
