Alarming Rise in HIV Infections in Assam: A Critical Public Health Alert Amidst Low Prevalence
In Guwahati, the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) has reported a rise in new HIV infections despite a low overall prevalence rate. On World AIDS Day, ASACS emphasized the theme “Take the rights path: My health, my right!” to highlight the importance of human rights and community inclusion in the fight against AIDS. The event, held at Nehrubali playground in collaboration with the Nagaon district administration, facilitated activities aimed at public awareness.
Data from 2023-24 reveals that out of 10,82,024 individuals tested at integrated counseling and testing centers in Assam, 7,274 were identified as HIV positive. Between April and October 2024, 4,37,830 tests led to 3,947 positive results, with Kamrup (Metro) district reporting the highest number of cases followed by Nagaon and Cachar. A significant 64.6% of transmissions were linked to injecting drug use, while 25.2% were from heterosexual contact.
Former health minister Keshab Mahanta pointed out the risks of high-risk behaviors such as unprotected sex and needle sharing. Dr. P Ashok Babu, health and family welfare department commissioner, noted a shift in the primary HIV transmission route in the state from sexual contact to needle sharing among drug users. As a response, Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) centers have been established in various hospitals to rehabilitate injecting drug users with oral prescribed medications.
ASACS Project Director Dr. Indranoshee Das emphasized the society’s ongoing efforts to combat HIV through targeted campaigns in vulnerable districts, prisons, and detention centers. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to reduce HIV prevalence and foster community awareness, with a notable 60-day intensified IEC campaign being implemented across 10 districts.
This report also highlights the rise of pediatric AIDS cases in Jharkhand amid declining HIV testing rates, prompting enhanced public education and healthcare access efforts.
