Meghalaya Triumphs: Secures Rs 199 Crore Boost to Transform Umiam Lake and Mawkhanu into Mesmerizing Tourist Havens
Meghalaya has successfully secured Rs 199 crore from the Finance Ministry to significantly boost its tourism infrastructure, focusing on two transformative projects at Umiam Lake and Mawkhanu in the East Khasi Hills district. These funds were allocated under the “Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale” initiative, designed to enhance tourism facilities across India while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Ranking among the top five beneficiaries, Meghalaya received a substantial portion of the Rs 3,295.76 crore allotted to 23 states nationwide. The state distinguished itself by obtaining sanctioned funds of Rs 198.5 crore, surpassing not only other Northeastern states but also numerous larger states, with only Assam receiving over Rs 100 crore.
The approved funds are earmarked for the redevelopment of Umiam Lake and the creation of an iconic tourist destination at Mawkhanu, each project being allocated Rs 99.27 crore. These developments are expected to uplift the state’s tourism appeal to global standards, promising enhanced tourism infrastructure and contributing to sustainable economic advancement.
Expressing pride in the achievement, the Chief Minister’s Office lauded Meghalaya’s accomplishment via their official social media platform, noting that under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s leadership, the state has surpassed many other Northeastern regions to secure over Rs 100 crore in funding.
