Manipur CM Triumphantly Inaugurates Landmark Infrastructure Project for Assam Rifles Relocation from Historic Langthabal Old Palace
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh recently inaugurated the construction of new infrastructure to relocate the Assam Rifles camp from the historic Langthabal Old Palace grounds. This relocation, organized by the Department of Art and Culture, satisfies a longstanding demand from Manipur’s citizens and student unions. The historic site, located within the Manipur University’s campus at Canchipur, had been the subject of calls to preserve its cultural and historical significance by shifting the military camp to an adjacent area.
During the inauguration, CM Biren Singh expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their cooperation and support. He acknowledged this move as a historic achievement for Manipur, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage, citing the Langthabal Palace’s historical role as a summer retreat for Maharaj after Kangla.
Singh also conceded delays in the relocation process, citing communication gaps between the Assam Rifles and the state government as contributing factors. He lauded the Assam Rifles’ understanding and expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the issue, which had persisted for years.
In response to criticism from the Mizo National Front (MNF) and demands for his resignation, CM Biren Singh dismissed the allegations, advising against interference in other states’ affairs. He reiterated his commitment to addressing concerns within Manipur, including the ongoing search for an individual who went missing from an army camp.
Professor W Chandbabu, Registrar of Manipur University, welcomed the decision, noting its significant impact on preserving the palace’s historical legacy and fostering emotional bonds within the community. He expressed optimism that relocating the Assam Rifles post would bring relief and satisfaction to various societal groups and the university community.
The move represents a step forward in preserving Manipur’s rich history, promising new hope for cultural conservation and a stronger societal connection to the Langthabal Palace.
