Shockwaves and Cheers: Unpacking Reactions to HC’s Bold Ban on Thin Plastic Bags
In response to the Meghalaya High Court’s mandate to ban plastic materials under 120 microns, there are varied opinions among vendors and residents. The court instructed the government to stop the manufacturing, sale, and usage of such plastics and to engage in rigorous enforcement, including inspections and confiscations. The move stems from environmental concerns, notably the damaging effects of plastic on ecosystems, drainage systems, and water bodies.
Shopkeepers across the region express concerns about the economic impact of the ban. Many small vendors, heavily reliant on plastic bags, feel they are ill-prepared to absorb the cost of more expensive alternatives like paper or cloth. A grocery store owner in Laitumkhrah pointed out that alternatives remain unaffordable for many small businesses. A vegetable vendor in Bara Bazar echoed this sentiment, noting that while customers are hesitant to pay for eco-friendly bags, these added costs strain small vendors.
Practical challenges also arise, particularly for businesses dealing with perishable goods. A butcher highlighted the inadequacy of paper or cloth bags for items like fish, which require durable packaging.
Despite vendor concerns, some residents support the ban as a crucial step for environmental protection. One local emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in reducing plastic use and its harmful environmental impact. However, another resident argued that more awareness and incentives are necessary to ensure a smooth transition and public compliance.
The state’s Forest and Environment Department has been tasked with creating effective plastic waste management systems, as documented in its affidavit following the court’s earlier orders. The court acknowledged the department’s efforts but stressed that more time and action are necessary for complete implementation. The matter will be assessed again on March 11, 2025, as the judiciary maintains that effective regulation is essential for safeguarding the environment and public health.
