Manipur Govt Fiercely Rebukes MNF’s Bold Claims on CM’s Resignation
On November 29 in Manipur, a sharp exchange erupted between the Manipur government and the Mizo National Front (MNF) following comments made by MNF General Secretary VL Krosehnehzova. In a press statement, Krosehnehzova demanded the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, citing the worsening crisis in the state as evidence of his administration’s failure. He criticized the CM’s leadership, linking it to human rights erosion and religious tensions.
Responding strongly on Thursday, the Manipur government, via the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), criticized MNF’s remarks, urging Mizoram to refrain from interfering in Manipur’s internal matters. The statement attributed the ongoing crisis to illegal immigrants from Myanmar and emphasized that Manipur’s proactive ‘War on Drugs,’ including the seizure and destruction of drugs valued at Rs 60,000 crores, specifically targeted the illicit narcotics trade, not religious communities as suggested by the MNF.
Highlighting tactical shifts in criminal activities, the Manipur government noted that while drug transit within Manipur has ceased, Mizoram has become a preferred route for illegal arms and drugs between India and Myanmar. They urged the MNF to prioritize drug trade threats in Mizoram instead of criticizing Manipur’s lawful initiatives.
The statement also offered potential collaboration with Mizoram to address drug trafficking concerns if sought by the MNF.
Amidst the tense exchange, Krosehnehzova appealed to the central government to intervene decisively. He lamented the current government’s inaction as a disservice to democracy and a global embarrassment, underscoring the importance of justice and secularism in governance.
The debate underscores the deepening complexities in regional politics and governance challenges posed by illicit trade and immigration issues in the northeastern states.
