Empowering Surge: How the Rise of Women in the Workforce Fuels a Startup Boom in Ahmedabad

At a recent talk at the Ahmedabad Management Association, Yamal Vyas, Chairman of the Fourth State Finance Commission of Gujarat, discussed the growth of India’s economy and the increasing presence of women in the workforce. Vyas noted that over the past six years, the percentage of women in the workforce has risen from 22% in 2017-18 to 37%. This surge, he suggested, might have contributed to a rise in the number of startups, as women’s regular incomes enable men in their families to take entrepreneurial risks.

In the realm of financial services, Vyas predicted significant growth, with a trend towards smaller banks merging into larger entities. He foresees a future dominated by a few major private and public sector banks.

Addressing the challenges India faces on its path to becoming a $5 trillion economy, Vyas identified mindset and bureaucracy as key hurdles. He pointed to issues like restrictive labor and land laws that often impede progress. However, he expressed optimism that India could achieve this economic milestone by 2027-28.
