Unlocking Heritage: A Passionate Journey to Preserve Naga Languages and Culture
The Naga languages convention commenced on Monday at Ura Academy in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. This two-day event celebrates the rich oral traditions of the Naga people, offering a platform for languages from various districts of Nagaland to present their diverse cultural heritage.
Organized by Nagaland University’s Tenyidie department, Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies, and Linguistics department, in partnership with Sahitya Akademi and the Union Ministry of Culture, the convention underscores the importance of preserving Naga languages. In his inaugural address, N Suresh Babu, Deputy Secretary of Sahitya Akademi, implored attendees to reconnect with their roots and recognize the critical need to preserve cultural traditions through such gatherings.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof. GT Thong, highlighted Nagaland’s status as India’s most linguistically diverse state, home to 19 languages and 16 tribes, each with unique dialects. He emphasized raising awareness and conserving the Naga tribes’ linguistic and cultural heritage.
Mimi Kevichusa Ezung, the convention coordinator, provided an overview of Nagaland’s linguistic landscape in her keynote address. She expressed the hope that the event would enrich the existing literature of each tribe with contributions such as poems, folktales, lullabies, and translated works.
Petekhrienuo Sorhie, head of the Tenyidie department, in her welcome remarks, noted that folklore reflects a society’s dreams, fears, and aspirations, further underscoring the significance of this linguistic celebration.
This convention not only seeks to preserve the Naga languages but also aims to foster cultural pride and unity among different tribes by acknowledging and documenting their rich heritage.
