Powerful United Farmers Front Stages Impactful Protest in Krishnagiri
The United Farmers Front organized a protest in Krishnagiri on November 26, 2024, highlighting demands crucial to the agricultural community. Key among their demands was a legislative mandate for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) encompassing 50% of production costs. They also pressed for the complete forgiveness of farm loans and significant policy changes to curb farmer suicides. The protestors voiced their disapproval of the Electricity Act amendments and opposed the introduction of prepaid smart meters. Additionally, they advocated for enhanced crop and livestock insurance through public sector banks to mitigate financial risks for farmers.
The demonstration called on the government to extend the benefits of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to excluded families, settle pending wage arrears, and increase daily wages to ₹600, with a work extension to 200 days annually. The farmers also sought a monthly pension of ₹10,000 for those over 60, emphasizing the need for their consent in land acquisition projects. Furthermore, they demanded stricter adherence to the Forest Rights Act, 2006, and improved land acquisition and rehabilitation policies to aid project-affected farmers.
