Heartbreaking Struggles: Empowering Puroik Villagers in Their Fight for Essential Facilities
Villages in the Kakoi circle of Papum Pare district, primarily inhabited by the Puroik community, continue to struggle without electricity. Jabam Kabuang, Boginadi, Lali, and Bor-Hill face ongoing issues since the solar panels distributed to 20 households in 2019 have deteriorated, rendering them inoperative. Waru Nakong Yumta, a local youth leader and the art & culture secretary of the All Puroik Students’ Union, highlighted this pressing concern.
The lack of power leads to frequent incidents involving wild elephants. Recently, an elephant damaged a bamboo house in Jabam Kabuang, disrupting the life of 60-year-old Da Yakli and his two children. Waru emphasized that electricity could deter such encounters by illuminating the villages and thus keeping elephants away. This is not an isolated case, as a primary school was previously damaged by elephants due to the absence of lights.
The educational system suffers as well, with students’ studies hampered by the lack of power and insufficient teachers. The community’s broader infrastructure needs remain unmet, including the absence of road access. The existing wooden suspension bridge is in a state of disrepair, becoming perilous during rainfalls. Additionally, villagers are forced to travel to Assam for milling rice due to the absence of a local rice mill.
The vital Jal Jeevan Mission scheme has yet to provide water facilities to Jabam Kabuang, leaving residents without basic water access and only a single Gaon Bura serving over 360 villagers. Efforts to seek government intervention have been made, with a representation submitted to MLA Nabam Vivek, requesting solar light panels with inverters. Waru urges the government to address these essential infrastructural deficiencies to improve the community’s quality of life.
