Outrage in Guwahati: Opposition Urges Immediate Dismissal of Officer Following Shocking Assault on Delivery Boy
Opposition parties criticized the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, over the alleged misconduct of the police. They called for the dismissal of Officer-in-Charge Bhargav Borbora of Panbazar police station, who physically assaulted and threatened Cotton University student Gyandeep Hazarika, working as a delivery executive, for a traffic violation on Friday evening.
Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi condemned the assault as indicative of the “abusive character” of Assam Police, describing it as attempted murder due to the death threat involved. He advocated for Borbora’s immediate arrest. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, attracted significant criticism, prompting Director General of Police GP Singh to initiate a departmental inquiry, ultimately leading to Borbora’s suspension.
Gaurav Gogoi, Congress’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, quickly lambasted the Chief Minister, attributing the police’s deteriorating conduct to his governance. He expressed concern over the CM’s influence encouraging unprofessional behavior among police, turning citizens into victims.
Further criticism came from retired DIG Violate Baruah, who remarked on social media that while aggressive police conduct is celebrated in films, it is unacceptable in reality. She questioned Borbora’s qualifications for such a crucial position, suggesting he enjoyed unwarranted favors from superiors. Baruah also criticized the police department for their reactionary suspension of Borbora following public outcry, rather than proactively addressing his behavior. She urged the authorities to ensure police officers are properly trained to respect and protect citizens, emphasizing that public funds should not pay the salaries of such officers.
This incident has highlighted concerns about police behavior in Assam and sparked a broader discourse on accountability and governance under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration.
