China Eagerly Seeks Strong Partnership and Friendship with the U.S., Declares Chinese Envoy
Flags of the United States and China were on display at the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai as both nations attempt to recalibrate their diplomatic ties. In a recent speech in Hong Kong, China’s ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, emphasized Beijing’s willingness to be partners and friends with Washington, stressing that China does not aim to surpass or replace the U.S. This comes as China seeks to reset its relationship with America in anticipation of Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in January. Trump has vowed to impose more than a 60% tariff on Chinese imports, a move Beijing hopes might also frustrate U.S. allies, thereby improving China’s global influence and trade relationships.
Chinese President Xi Jinping recently appealed for a rejection of unilateralism and protectionism, advocating instead for economic globalization. Despite this, some analysts believe China’s current appeal as a counterbalance to a Trump-led U.S. has diminished since 2016, when Trump’s presidency commenced.
In his address, Xie underscored that the Sino-U.S. partnership should not be seen as a zero-sum game, highlighting potential areas of cooperation such as trade, agriculture, energy, artificial intelligence, and public health. He called for open dialogue to resolve issues equitably, emphasizing the importance of direct communication.
Xie identified Taiwan as the most significant point of potential conflict between the two countries, urging opposition to “separatists” in Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as a part of its territory, a stance that Taiwan, governed democratically, firmly rejects.
Overall, Beijing appears determined to foster a cooperative relationship with Washington, while navigating complex geopolitical challenges and seeking broader global engagement.
