Shocking Allegation: BJP Accuses Gaurav Gogoi of Election Code Violation in High-Stakes Behali Bypolls | Guwahati News
Guwahati: Tensions flared in Assam’s political landscape as BJP minister Pijush Hazarika accused Congress deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi of breaching the Model Code of Conduct during the Behali byelection. Hazarika alleged that on the polling day, Gogoi and other Congress members from outside districts overtly campaigned at booth locations, violating the silent period rules. “Such violations are unacceptable,” Hazarika remarked, urging Congress to refrain from such actions in the future.
Despite Hazarika’s allegations, Congress denied the claims, with Assam PCC spokesperson Bedabrata Bora criticizing the government for its supposed failure to protect journalists during the electoral period. Bora labeled Hazarika’s assertions as baseless, suggesting that BJP had manipulated the elections through the Election Commission’s favoritism and engaged in harassment against Congress supporters in both the Samaguri and Behali constituencies. Additionally, Bora spotlighted purported attacks on journalists by BJP workers, stating that although Hazarika earlier promised consequences for offenders, no significant action followed.
The political climate is intensified by the looming byelections in six constituencies across Assam and Meghalaya, characterized by a showdown between a BJP-led alliance and a scattered opposition. The races are marked by the participation of prominent political family members, presenting a glimpse into potential dynamics for the 2026 assembly elections.
This series of accusations and counter-accusations underscores the contentious and charged atmosphere surrounding the byelections, reflecting broader electoral tensions in the region as parties jostle for influence amidst allegations of misconduct and bias.
