Defiant NEHUSU & KSU’s Hunger Strike Escalates: Demand for VC’s Removal Intensifies
Shillong, Nov 15: The agitation at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has intensified as the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit remain resolute in their indefinite hunger strike, insisting on the removal of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The unions have declared they will persist with the protest until the government issues a decisive directive or notification regarding the Vice Chancellor’s removal.
Addressing students and faculty after an extended meeting on Friday evening, NEHUSU General Secretary Toniho S Kharsati reiterated their unwavering stance. "We are firm in our demand for the VC’s removal. Until this is accomplished, our hunger strike will continue," Kharsati asserted.
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, there are growing health concerns among the participants. Many student leaders and striking students have been hospitalized. Especially concerning is the health condition of NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun, who remains under critical care and observation.
Kharsati relayed a message from Sohtun, who remains steadfast in his commitment to the cause despite his illness. Sohtun has urged continued support from all involved, warning that challenging days lie ahead. "He will rejoin as soon as his health improves," Kharsati conveyed, emphasizing the shared resolve to press forward.
The unions’ unyielding demand for leadership change at NEHU underscores the tensions between the student community and university administration. With the health crisis intensifying among protestors, the situation demands urgent intervention to address grievances and ensure the well-being of the students involved. The state authorities are yet to respond to the escalating crisis, leaving the student bodies adamant and determined in their stand against the current VC.
