Amazon Under Fire: House Committee Probes ‘Shocking’ TikTok Deal Over Safety Concerns
Recently, Amazon engaged in discussions with the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party regarding its partnership with TikTok, as confirmed by CNBC. This discussion, held in September, arose from concerns about a shopping deal announced in August that allows TikTok users to link their accounts with Amazon for seamless purchases. The committee expressed its apprehension, labeling the collaboration as perilous due to national security risks associated with TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance.
TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains in limbo; a law signed by President Joe Biden in April mandates that ByteDance must sell TikTok by January 19, or face restrictions, including its removal from app stores. However, there’s a potential lifeline from President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to “save” TikTok, although he previously favored banning the app during his first term. Notably, Trump’s softened stance aligns with discussions he reportedly had with Jeff Yass, whose firm holds significant ByteDance stakes.
Both Amazon and TikTok declined immediate comment on the issue, reflecting the tense anticipation around the app’s status in the U.S. market.
