Urgent: NEHU Students’ Union President Hospitalized Amid Desperate Hunger Strike in Meghalaya
The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) President, Sandy Sohtun, has been hospitalized due to health complications arising from a hunger strike. The strike, initiated by students of Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University, aims to pressure the administration into meeting their demands, which include the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, the registrar, and other officials. As Sohtun exhibits alarming symptoms like blurred vision, he has been admitted to the Critical Care Unit at Shillong Civil Hospital.
The protest has escalated tensions on campus, leading to a lockdown as students await action on their grievances. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, responded to the growing unrest by forming a committee to investigate the alleged mismanagement and administrative failures within the university. This decision, articulated in an official order dated November 14, was driven by serious concerns raised by students, student associations, and media reports.
Despite these developments, the hunger strike remains unresolved, and students continue to hope their demands will soon be addressed. The situation underscores the pressing need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further deterioration.
