Revitalizing Design Thinking: Uncover the Truth Behind Its Flaws and Transform It into a Success

Design thinking, popularized by pioneers like David Kelley and Tim Brown at IDEO and Stanford Design School, has become a central strategy in business problem-solving. Despite its widespread acclaim, its promise remains unfulfilled, often bogged down in organizational inertia. In India, Vishal Sikka, former CEO of Infosys, brought the concept to the forefront, though with limited impact in his domain.

Design thinking is a creative, human-centric problem-solving approach involving empathy and iterative prototyping. Its collaborative and insightful nature is its strength, yet it faces significant challenges. These include an overemphasis on empathy at the expense of business priorities, a shortage of effective ideation tools, and a lack of follow-through post-workshops. Empathy, without clear intent, can derail projects, and the limited tools force reliance on external methodologies like lateral thinking and Blue Ocean Strategy.

Pavan Soni, founder of Inflexion Point, suggests reforms: initiating with a clear agenda to align stakeholders and ensuring a list of strategies to carry validated ideas to completion. He recommends a revised design thinking model: Inspire, Empathize and Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test, and Scale. This approach emphasizes clear intent, robust tools, and scaling viable ideas.

Soni, also the author of “Design Your Thinking,” believes these adjustments can unlock the full potential of design thinking, marrying empathy with business acumen for substantial impact.
