Mizoram’s Outrage: Political Parties Unite in Condemnation of Tribal Woman’s Tragic Killing in Manipur
In a tragic incident on November 7, a Hmar tribal woman was brutally killed during an attack on Zairawn village, near Manipur’s Jiribam town, sparking widespread condemnation from political parties in Mizoram. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and opposition parties Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress have all denounced the horrific act, expressing their outrage over the violence and destruction perpetrated by alleged Meitei militants.
The incident involved the reported shooting, capture, and burning alive of 31-year-old Zosangkim Hmar, a mother of three, during the assault where 17 houses were set ablaze. The MNF highlighted this brutal violence as a betrayal of ongoing peace efforts between the Manipur Zo tribes and the Meiteis, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action against the offenders.
The Hmar Inpui, representing the Hmar tribes, allege that the militants not only murdered Zosangkim Hmar but also subjected her to sexual assault prior to her death. Her husband, Ngurthansang, has formally lodged a complaint with the Jiribam police detailing these horrific acts.
This incident has raised serious concerns over communal peace in the region and the safety of the Zo people, with calls for justice and an end to such violence. The parties have emphasized the need to protect all citizens from such atrocities in the future, reiterating their commitment to maintaining harmony and urging for justice for the victim and her family.
