Experience the Hilarious Revival: Neil Simon’s ‘The Odd Couple’ Captivates Bengaluru’s Theatre Scene
After an eight-year break, theatre company Fools & Sages returns to the stage with Neil Simon’s iconic comedy, The Odd Couple, directed by Ajai Kesavan. The play, featuring mismatched roommates Oscar, a laid-back sportswriter, and Felix, a compulsively neat man fresh from separation, offers Bengaluru audiences a blend of humor and tenderness. Ajai’s nostalgia, stemming from watching the 1968 film version with his father, inspired him to adapt this classic for a local audience, including elements like Indian English accents to enhance relatability.
Ajai skillfully navigates the challenge of infusing Simon’s 1960s humor with contemporary theatrical expectations, focusing on mastering the play’s deadpan humor without overdoing physical comedy. Casting was selective, with workshops honing each actor’s comedic timing, especially crucial for the contrasting personalities of Oscar and Felix. Additionally, staging on Bengaluru’s smaller platforms required innovative choreography to maintain the play’s dynamic essence.
Despite logistical challenges, Ajai celebrates the creative freedom in Simon’s script, utilizing its sharp dialogue and rich character dynamics. Building authentic chemistry among the cast was essential, achieved through poker sessions mirroring the play’s characters. Ajai notes that everyone can relate to Oscar and Felix, making the play universally appealing.
The Odd Couple will be performed at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield, from November 15 to 17. Tickets are available on BookMyShow.
