Breaking: TMC Leader Urgently Appeals to ECI – Critical Issues Threaten Bengal By-Polls
Kolkata, November 11 (IANS): Derek O’Brien, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), addressed concerns about the upcoming by-elections in West Bengal in a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI). He called for urgent intervention in light of two main issues that threaten the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
First, O’Brien highlighted alleged misconduct by the central armed police forces (CAPF), claiming they were operating without the mandatory presence of state police. He accused them of entering private residences to intimidate voters and sway them towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The second issue addressed in the letter was allegedly derogatory comments made by BJP’s West Bengal state president and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar. During an election rally in Taldangra, Bankura, Majumdar reportedly insulted the state police and the emblem of India.
O’Brien criticized the ECI’s lack of immediate action and failure to issue directives to the BJP and CAPF to stop these alleged unlawful activities. He expressed concern over the ECI’s late decision to meet with a TMC delegation just 90 minutes before the end of the campaign, rendering their concerns ineffective.
The TMC leader accused the ECI of delayed responses that potentially favored the BJP, compromising election fairness and eroding public confidence in democratic institutions. He urged the commission to act decisively to restore trust in the electoral process.
Responding to these accusations, BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh dismissed them as an attempt by TMC to divert attention from its own use of state resources and power. He claimed that the TMC cannot conduct elections without resorting to muscle power and malpractices.
The political tension in West Bengal underscores the stakes of the upcoming by-elections, with both parties trading allegations and the public watching closely.
