Sudan Strongly Rejects US Accusations: Defends Humanitarian Integrity Amid Global Concerns
Port Sudan, November 10 (IANS): The Sudanese government has refuted allegations made by the United States concerning the obstruction of humanitarian aid during the nation’s armed conflict. The Sudan Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) defended its operations against remarks by US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, suggesting these claims are an orchestrated attack on the commission’s activities, according to Xinhua news agency.
The HAC’s statement argued that Perriello’s criticism should instead focus on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which has been accused of looting, detaining aid workers, blocking aid delivery, and denying access to essential food and medicine for those in need. It further detailed that the commission has been actively facilitating aid efforts by granting 12,170 movement permits to organizations and agencies, authorizing 1,073 trucks through the Adre and Tina crossings, and approving 2,985 entry visas for foreign aid workers since the start of the year until November 6.
Moreover, the Sudanese government has committed substantial resources, providing over $600 million through customs and tax exemptions, transportation of aid, and the purchase of necessary supplies. In contrast, Perriello claimed on social media platform X that the HAC impeded 520 out of 550 relief trucks from departing Port Sudan to distribute vital supplies across the country.
Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF since mid-April 2023, resulting in severe humanitarian consequences. A report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project noted that the conflict has caused over 24,850 deaths as of October 14. Additionally, the International Organization for Migration estimated that over 14 million individuals have been displaced within or outside the country by October 29. The situation remains critical as both international and local efforts aim to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
