Jairam Ramesh Fiercely Criticizes BJP: Uncovering the Water Crisis and Caste Census Issues in Maharashtra Assembly Elections
On November 9, 2024, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh announced that the Congress government in Telangana has initiated a comprehensive door-to-door caste survey covering 1.17 crore households. In a press release, he criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on a nationwide caste census and increasing the 50% reservation cap for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs, despite his visit to Vidarbha, a region significant in the social justice movement.
Ramesh posed four pressing questions to the Prime Minister, highlighting BJP’s passive stance on caste issues and Narendra Modi’s unfulfilled 2014 promise to imprison BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Chavan. Despite this promise, Chavan is now an ally and his daughter is contesting in the Bhokar Assembly seat for BJP.
Criticism was also directed at the neglect of the Nanded division’s railway infrastructure, with scant electrification and ancient metre-gauge tracks, alongside unmet promises for development in Marathwada. Additionally, Ramesh emphasized that, despite a promise by former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis for a multi-crore water project, Marathwada continues to face acute water scarcity, affecting over 600 villages.
These issues were placed in the spotlight as Maharashtra approaches its 2024 Assembly Elections, posing significant challenges for the ruling BJP amid Congress’s assertive campaign strategies.
