Historic Milestone: Nagaland Boldly Submits Frontier Nagaland Comments to MHA
The Nagaland home department announced that it has submitted its feedback on the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS)-III concerning the proposed Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) or Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The submission was made via a letter dated November 6, 2024, and included detailed comments from the state government. This feedback follows the state cabinet’s approval on October 30, where the long-standing demands of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) were discussed. ENPO has consistently advocated for FNT’s establishment, citing developmental neglect in eastern Nagaland, which includes the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator.
Nagaland’s minister for power and parliamentary affairs, KG Kenye, highlighted that the cabinet’s discussions demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing ENPO’s demands while adhering to the traditional and legal provisions under Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution. Last December, the Union Ministry shared the draft MoS highlights and awaited the state’s feedback by the end of December 2023 to facilitate tripartite talks with the central government, the state, and ENPO.
ENPO’s demands have grown over the years, leading to actions such as boycotting Lok Sabha and local body elections to press for the establishment of FNT. The Ministry of Home Affairs will soon convene tripartite talks after analyzing the submitted feedback, aiming to resolve this long-pending issue and address the developmental concerns raised by eastern Nagaland’s tribes.
