Deep-Rooted Corruption: Unraveling the Grip on Our Lifestyle and Mindset | MorungExpress
The 20th Morung Lecture, held on November 8 at Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung, focused on the crucial topic of “Transparency in Nagaland: A Tool for Accountability in Governance.” Dr. Chingmak Chang, Secretary of Eleutheros Christian Society, delivered a poignant address, discussing the normalization of corruption in daily life and its institutionalization within tribal societies. He highlighted the tension between Naga cultural values and democratic principles, pointing out that hierarchical structures and strong patriarchy pose challenges to democracy in the region.
Dr. Chang stressed that while tribal cultures offer valuable insights, they often face issues like nepotism, favoritism, and cultural erosion due to limited local democracy. He advocated for community-led decision-making, support for cultural education, and inclusive governance to preserve cultural identity and promote democratic values.
Professor Lanu Longkumer, another speaker at the lecture, emphasized the importance of transparency in government, linking it to accountability and efficiency. He criticized the state of governance in Nagaland, citing issues like inadequate infrastructure, youth unemployment, and widespread corruption. Longkumer argued that citizens must actively engage in governance processes to foster transparency and accountability. He identified three citizen types: naive, complicit, and passive spectators, urging each to participate actively in democratic discourse and reform efforts.
The lecture, moderated by Arien Jamir and organized by The Morung Express and FAC’s Research & Development Cell, underscored the need for individuals to embrace honesty and truth in governance. Akangjungla, Director of News & Administration at The Morung Express, concluded by asserting that governance begins at the individual level, emphasizing the moral responsibility to create a world of peace, justice, and equality. Through these exchanges, the lecture aimed to inspire change and foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Nagaland.
