Passionate Plea: NEHU VC Advocates Transformative Dialogue to Address Student Demands in Meghalaya
Amid escalating tensions at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla has appealed to students to abandon their hunger strike and participate in dialogue to address their concerns. This crisis erupted when students declared an indefinite strike and a complete lockdown of the university premises, highlighting unmet demands by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU). Their demands include the dismissal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, selection of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Tura campus, and swift conduct of PGSU elections.
In a public appeal, Vice-Chancellor Shukla conveyed his deep concern for the students’ health, stating, “I earnestly request the students, through the media, to call off the hunger strike and work with us to find solutions. Without dialogue, my hands are tied.” The administration’s attempts to directly communicate with the protesting students have faced obstacles, with a magistrate advising Shukla against visiting certain areas due to safety issues, thereby stalling the response process to student demands.
Vice-Chancellor Shukla addressed the grievances concerning the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, acknowledging, “I understand that there are some issues raised against these individuals by the student community, demanding the removal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.” Despite his efforts to engage and resolve the conflict, Shukla’s appeal met resistance as students demanded his resignation over dialogue.
Committed to resolving the crisis, Shukla emphasized the need for constructive discussions to move forward with solutions collaboratively. His call for dialogue remains pivotal in hopes of reopening communication channels to address the pressing issues. By ensuring a safe atmosphere for dialogue, the Vice-Chancellor aims to forge a path towards resolution, highlighting the importance of mutual engagement in solving the ongoing unrest at NEHU.
