Tensions flared in Chittagong, Bangladesh, on November 5, following a contentious social media post by Osman Ali, a member of the radical Islamic group Jamat-e-Islami. The post, which insulted the Hindu faith and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), provoked violent clashes between the Hindu community and security forces. Local Hindus began protesting outside Ali’s shop, leading to confrontations with security personnel.
As the situation deteriorated in Hazari Gali, a predominantly Hindu area, military forces were dispatched to restore order. Notably, the crackdown featured violent scenes, including security forces using batons on protesters and reportedly firing blank rounds to disperse them. Allegations have surfaced of security personnel dismantling CCTV cameras to curb documentation of the violence.
Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen shared footage on social media, depicting intense clashes labeled as “Hindus vs Military.” A senior official from Chittagong Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers faced significant resistance, with incidents of acid and bricks being hurled at them, resulting in injuries to nine officers.
Local authorities have filed charges against 582 individuals, with 49 arrests reported. However, Hindu leaders claim the security response disproportionately targeted their community, despite involvement from both Hindus and Muslims in the initial clashes.
The ongoing military operations have left Hazari Gali residents under stringent surveillance, with restricted movement and door-to-door searches reported. This unrest is part of a wider pattern of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, with Hindus making up about 8% of the population. Historically staunch supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, the Hindu community faces increasing attacks.
The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has condemned the violence and pledged to work with community leaders to protect Hindus. The crisis underscores deepening concerns over the rising attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh.
