Celebrating Innovation: Eluru’s Yellapragada SubbaRow Government Medical College Inspires Future Medical Pioneers
Minister for Health, Medical and Medical Education, Y. Satya Kumar Yadav, announced on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) that the Government Medical College in Eluru will be renamed in honor of eminent biochemist Yellapragada SubbaRow. SubbaRow, a native of Bhimavaram born in 1895 and a Madras Medical College alumnus, made significant advancements in biochemistry, discovering treatments for Filariasis and exploring the roles of phosphocreatine and ATP in muscle activity. His groundbreaking work in chemotherapy and contributions to antibiotic development, such as tetracycline, have benefited millions globally.
The proposal for this homage was welcomed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with appreciation extended to Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan for proposing the name. Recently, another government institution, the Government Medical College in Machilipatnam, was named after Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the National Flag, furthering the Andhra Pradesh government’s aim to honor national icons. The Eluru and Machilipatnam colleges are among five new institutions inaugurated under the YSRCP government, with the others located in Nandyal, Vizianagaram, and Rajamahendravaram.
Highlighting a distinction from other political parties, the Minister emphasized the NDA government’s commitment to preserving the legacies of notable figures instead of self-promotion, ensuring their contributions endure in public memory.
