Shocking Revelation: Maharashtra Hoteliers Warn of Privacy Risks for Guests and Celebrities!

Hoteliers in Maharashtra are expressing strong opposition to a recent government directive mandating the installation of AI-powered CCTVs in approximately 20,000 licensed bars. The order, described as “draconian” and likened to creating a “police state,” requires these establishments to implement advanced surveillance systems capable of real-time monitoring using AI and machine-learning algorithms. This technology aims to enhance security by analyzing footage for specific objects, faces, and behaviors, and sending alerts for user-defined activities.

The Hotel and Restaurant Association Western India (HRAWI) argues that the decision was made without consulting stakeholders and could impose significant financial and operational burdens on businesses. Concerns have been raised about the privacy of guests, especially celebrities and VIPs, with high risks of data breaches, hacking, and ransomware attacks due to the mandated data storage and transmission. HRAWI Secretary Pradeep Shetty highlighted that the costs for installation and maintenance—as high as Rs 5 lakhs per establishment—could overwhelm small businesses, suggesting that the state should cover these expenses.

Additionally, HRAWI Vice-Chairman Chetan Mehta noted the impracticality of such surveillance, with the huge data volume posing management challenges and raising ethical and legal issues. The industry fears that this increased intrusion may drive away patrons, ultimately harming hospitality businesses. The debate continues as stakeholders urge the government to reconsider the directive, prioritizing privacy and operational viability.
