A group of 25 students in Meghalaya has launched a vibrant street safety initiative as part of the state’s Reimagining Streets programme. The project focuses on the road in front of Aayakar Bhavan, transforming it with colorful artwork to enhance urban spaces. This initiative represents the beginning of Meghalaya’s efforts in tactical urbanism, extending from the IGP to the DC office junction. The overarching aim is to redesign urban areas to improve pedestrian safety and mobility.
This month-long pilot project will feature painted pathways, traffic cones, planter boxes, and new road markings to assess public feedback and gauge the project’s impact. These efforts align with the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy introduced earlier this year. The policy’s Vision 2030 sets an ambitious goal to allocate 30% of road space to non-motorized transport, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is being closely supervised by officials from the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Urban Affairs Department, and Public Works Department, who are working with student volunteers to execute the painting activities. Throughout the trial period, the government plans to gather community feedback, which will be crucial in making informed decisions about permanent changes to the streetscape.
Such low-cost urban design experiments have shown success in other cities, offering a flexible approach to optimize street layouts while minimizing inconvenience to daily activities. Meghalaya’s initiative aims to replicate these successes, enhancing street safety and mobility for its residents.
