A man impersonating a Deputy Superintendent of Police has been arrested in Karimganj for cyber blackmail. Shahjahan Uddin Laskar, apprehended in Katigora, Cachar district, was caught following a complaint from one of his victims. Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das spearheaded the swift arrest.
The investigation was triggered by a complaint from Atik Ahmed Chowdhury, who had befriended Laskar on Facebook. During their online interactions, Laskar shared a pornographic video featuring Sunita Paul and then secretly recorded a compromising video of Chowdhury. The situation took a dark turn when Laskar falsely claimed that Paul had committed suicide, blaming Chowdhury as responsible in a fabricated note. Leveraging this lie, Laskar extorted Chowdhury, demanding ten lakh rupees to suppress the fictitious scandal.
Intimidated, Chowdhury initially paid five lakh rupees on October 1. However, realizing the extent of Laskar’s deceit, he reported the incident to the Karimganj Sadar police station. Responding promptly, the police conducted a detailed investigation, leading to Laskar’s arrest. Upon searching his belongings, authorities seized multiple mobile phones, a toy pistol, and a Mahindra Thar vehicle.
Further revelations have unraveled Laskar’s involvement in various cybercrimes. He is suspected of producing obscene videos involving several individuals. “We have discovered numerous explicit videos on Laskar’s mobile phone and are examining additional complaints related to his criminal activities,” stated Pratap Das, Additional Superintendent of Police.
The arrest shines a spotlight on the increasing threat of cybercrime and the impersonation of law enforcement personnel, raising concerns about online security and the necessity for individuals to exercise caution in their digital interactions. The case underscores the importance of swift police action and highlights the ongoing challenges in tackling cybercriminals exploiting technology for malicious purposes.
