Furious Backlash: Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh Under Fire for Choosing ‘Muslim’ Name Dua for Their Daughter
Bollywood actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh introduced their newborn daughter, Dua Padukone Singh, to fans and friends during Diwali. The couple shared her picture and announced her name on social media. However, the name sparked controversy online, with some users criticizing it for its Muslim origin and speculating if it was inspired by singer Dua Lipa. Critics suggested a Hindi alternative like “Prarthna” would have been more appropriate, arguing that the Bollywood stars were disregarding Hindu traditions and sentiments. Some comments accused the couple of intentionally choosing a Muslim name to provoke controversy.
Despite the backlash, supporters defended Deepika and Ranveer, asserting that the choice of their child’s name is a personal matter. They expressed amusement at the uproar, emphasizing that societal conventions should not dictate personal decisions. Notably, the child’s name breaks tradition by placing the mother’s surname first, indicative of a progressive shift from conventional patriarchal norms. Ranveer has previously expressed openness to adopting Deepika’s surname.
Born on September 8 in Mumbai’s HN Reliance Hospital, Dua’s birth was announced via Instagram. Deepika and Ranveer, who wed in a private ceremony at Italy’s Lake Como in 2018, shared pregnancy news earlier this year in February.
