Heartbreaking Reality: NSDF Exposes Ongoing Marginalization and Pervasive Exclusion of PwDs in Nagaland
Nagaland State Disability Forum Calls for Action Following Exclusion of PwDs at Event
Kohima, November 3 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF) expressed deep disappointment over the "inaccessibility and insensitivity" shown towards Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) at a recent event in Kohima. The incident highlighted the ongoing marginalization of disabled individuals in Nagaland, especially at an event meant to celebrate inclusivity.
The event, organized by the State’s SDG Coordination Centre, was the launch of the coffee table book, Weaving Dreams – A Tribute to Inspiring Women of Nagaland. Ironically, the venue was inaccessible to Diethono Nakhro, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, one of the women honored in the book. The NSDF pointed out that this was not a unique incident but a reflection of the everyday challenges faced by PwDs in Nagaland, emphasizing that "inaccessibility and exclusion are the norm."
One of the notable concerns is the event was orchestrated by a team committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, which include disability inclusion under "leave no one behind." The failure to ensure an accessible venue questions their commitment to these objectives.
The NSDF emphasized that accessibility is a right under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD), 2016, and termed the incident a violation of this act. They stressed that Nagaland’s public spaces, from government buildings to event venues, largely remain inaccessible, excluding many from participating in social, cultural, and economic life.
While apologies were appreciated, the NSDF asserted that actions, not apologies, are imperative. The Forum urged the Nagaland government, the SDG Coordination Centre, and all establishments to enforce the RPwD Act, implement inclusive policies, and ensure accessibility in all future events. The call extended to the public to help dismantle physical and attitudinal barriers that hinder PwDs’ full participation in society.
The NSDF stands in solidarity with Nakhro and the disabled community, urging Nagaland to move beyond symbolic gestures and implement real, lasting change towards a more inclusive and just society.
